Working with Dogs for Dogs
K9 BioWalk is working to develop a biomechanically compatible prosthetic limb for a German Shepherd named Patitas, who has underdeveloped hind legs. Canines that are born with underdeveloped limbs, develop osteosarcoma, or suffer from trauma often have to undergo limb amputation or even euthanization. Although there are existing prosthetics for dogs, such as 3D printed prosthetics and the Wheelie Vest, these solutions are costly, unique to each dog, do not allow for extensive movement, and can cause harm to the dog; therefore, there is a need for modular designs that take dog biomechanics into consideration and shorten the time required for dogs to become accustomed to the device. K9 BioWalk will address these needs by incorporating appropriate materials and sensors to ensure that Patitas, and other dogs, use the prosthetic legs properly.
